More shocking private prisons proposals, as close as Yuma!

Public Hearings Scheduled for Proposed Private Prisons in Five Arizona Towns

The Arizona Department of Corrections has given a green light to four private, for-profit correctional management corporations for the construction and management of an additional 5,000 state prison beds.

The Department of Corrections will be holding public hearings in each of the towns under consideration for a new prison or prisons. The public is encouraged to attend and voice their concerns about having a private prison as a neighbor.

Here is the schedule of the hearings:

1. Eloy: Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has proposed two prisons for Eloy—1,500 beds and 3,000 beds.

The Eloy public hearing will be held Tuesday, August 9th, 6-8pm at the Curiel Annex School, 304 West Alsdorf Rd., Eloy.

2. Goodyear: GEO Group (formerly Wackenhut) has proposed a prison that could be anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 beds.

The Goodyear public hearing will be held Wednesday, August 10th, 6-8 pm at the Desert Edge High School Auditorium, 15778 West Yuma Rd., Goodyear.

3. Winslow: LaSalle/Southwest Corrections has proposed a 1,000-bed prison for Winslow.

The Winslow public hearing will be held Thursday, August 11th, 6-8pm at the Winslow High School Performing Arts Center, 600 E. Cherry St., Winslow.

4. San Luis (Yuma): There are two proposed prisons for Yuma. Management and Training Corporation (MTC) has proposed to build a 3,000-bed prison and GEO Group seeks to build one with 2,000-3,000 beds.

The San Luis public hearing for both proposed prisons will be held Tuesday, August 16th, 6-10pm at the San Luis City Council Chambers, 1090 East Union St., San Luis.

5. Coolidge: Management and Training Corporation (MTC) has proposed a prison of 3,000 or 5,000 beds.

The Coolidge public hearing will be held Thursday, August 18th, 6-8pm at the Coolidge City Council Chambers, 911 S. Arizona Blvd., Coolidge.

This will be the one and only opportunity that the public will have to give input on these proposed prisons. Thus far, the only publicity for them has been a statutorily-required posting in the “legal notices” section of the local papers.

If you know anyone who lives in these communities, please encourage them to attend the hearings. AFSC will be organizing carpools from Tucson. Please contact: cisaacs@afsc.org.

Deja vu! You will remember from:
http://quartzsitearizona.blogspot.com/2010/09/gov-brewer-defends-private-prisons.html
Gov. Jan Brewer’s campaign chairman and policy adviser is also a lobbyist for the largest private prison company in the country. Perhaps it's because that same private prison company has the contact to incarcerate illegals rounded up by Brewer's SB1070? Caroline Isaacs from the American Friends Service Committee, which advocates for social justice issues, says "private prison companies have been buying influence in Arizona politics for years. The number of private prisons and jails operating across the state shows the result of that influence".

  2. Can the people of Arizona afford these prisons?
I'm no economist, but these facilities will require vast amounts of what is, at the moment, your most scarce and valuable resource: water.
When demand goes up, so will price.
"But these prisons will create new jobs" you say.
Good. You're going to need a second one to pay your water bill.

  3. OMG!! Are you scared that this might bring jobs to our community?? There is a alot of people in this town that would actually appreciate that....the group that is trying to raise families here. The group that is struggling to survive and make ends meet without the help of you and yours!! Jobs are welcome in this town!!! What you all dont realize is..YES this town has changed...we dont want it to be a Palm Springs either!! but it is growing...DEAL WITH IT!!! Be a law abiding citizen and let us raise our children in the same type of town you grew up in! Small town America please!

  4. Just a word of support. Private prisons are a malignant tumor. By definition they are not conducive to a free and just society. I could say a thousand words but these will suffice.

  5. I posted a comment but it disappeared. Just a word of support. Private prisons are a malignant tumor of an emerging police state and the opposite of a free and just society. It is incumbent on us to say no. I don't think the people who approve of these things, like say, your neighbor or local car salesman understand the implications in the long run. The money and jobs created will be blood money at the expense of humanity. If you think I am over the top just look at what has happened since their false flag 911. They will come after everyone eventually.

  6. To ANONYMOUSE: When I first came here (1989) the only income that was available, and required, was provided by restaurants, truck stops, trailer parks, Morgan (in Ehrenburg), and Social Security checks.
Where did all these people come from requiring more jobs? Why did people come here if they had to change the town over to suit their needs?

Ah, I know. It's progress. Some parts of the planet can't exist as a happy little, static entity. They need to grow like a malignant cancer until they strip the world of all it's resources. Beget children like the rabbits do before your enemies beget more than you.

Well if it's jobs you need how about something green. Like the Enviromission solar tower? NOT the other one that fries birds in flight.
No, I mean the one that just uses rising hot air to spin giant turbines. Enviromission wants to put their more environmentally clean version (that uses NO GROUNDWATER) just up the street from us too.

Private operated prisons serve another purpose besides employing people you know. Their main mission is to make a profit.
To make a profit they need to be filled with undesirables.
If they run short of those types they'll come looking for someone else to call an enemy of the people.
Maybe you. Or your son, because he can't find a job doing something useful.
Believe me, if they need to find someone to fill those prison beds they will lock up anyone that spits on the sidewalk.
When we have to create jobs by making new criminals out of our neighbors - we've sunk about as low as we can get.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, "Where do you think that your government is going to get the money to pay these people to lock up you or your neighbors"? States aren't allowed to print money out of thin air. It's the job of our federal government to keep making your money worth less by making more of it.
No Bucko, it's you and I via more taxes that will wind up footing the bill.
And if you think someone else is gonna pay those taxes, think again.
Taxes are the only "trickle down" concept that actually works. Every entity that provides something that you consume has to pass their taxes on down to you by increasing the costs of their products.

Consider this, maybe you came here to get away from the city.
When you come here and plant the seeds of progress, you will soon find that the city you came here to escape, has grown up right around you all over again.
It will feed on everything around it until, just like that cancer, it will consume everything around it. Sooner or later the host will die.

To paraphrase an infamous bandito (in Blazing Saddles), "We don' need no steen-king city".

  7. TO ADIAGOOO: Blah Blah Blah...have heard your message so many times over...and while I do honestly appreciate all that you say I do hope that you know times have CHANGED!!! Young people have moved into "your" town and we are here to stay. What does that mean??? That means we want the BEST for our children...and if that includes bringing jobs here so our schools will have more money then so be it. All I want is the best for my children and will make DAMN sure that I provide it. I am so sick of seeing all this propanganda on TV...I know everyone who is a visitor or friend on this site does not want to see this town prosper. All you want is to see this town go back to the way it was before...and that is impossible. This town has grown...it is not just for seniors and vendors anymore...it is time to just get used to that fact!

  8. Gee, I wish that my greatest wish for my children was to work in a private prison run without standards or oversite by somebody like Haliburton! The "BEST" for your children? Seriously? Quartzsite has lost more potential jobs because of our current council and town manager. Actions speak louder than their hollow promises. It sure seems like they don't want growth or progress unless they can benefit from it personally. Where's the QAC money for the kids? Where's the pool and community center Taft promised? Everyone says Carolyn Guthrie knows what really happened. If Jose and the rest of those idiots cared about our kids, they would have taken care of the water problem with all that magick grant money, instead of planting trees we have to water(because you sure can't drink it). Who do you think pays for that water? Now we have a grant Alex almost lost already, that we have to pay back if we don't build a community center on time and on budget. How has that worked for the snack shack? Did they even do an environmental impact study before the built it on BLM leased land. Oh wait, protocol impedes that progress we're all suffering under.
