 Review:
Quatrzsite is Not Worth the Trip - 2/10/2009

Have been going to Quartzsite for about 15 years for the flea market and shows and things have been going downhill at this yearly event in recent years. The town has been charging ever more money to vendors to set up their stalls in Quartzsite and over the last couple of years, there has been fewer and fewer vendors showing up. It just isn't worth the trip anymore.

Also, there is a police presence in Quartzsite that I'd not noticed in recent years. The town has become a police trap with the cops shaking down out of state tourists - no not me, but I heard complaints from others. There are better places to visit.

  1. Even Sperling's knows Quartzsite water quality gets a failing grade. How embarrassing!

  2. You need to get out of town already..everyone is tired of your crap..

  3. "Everyone"? Gee, everyone I talk to seems to want me to become a permanent resident and run for office, LOL! There's just a very small group of self serving petty dissidents at Town Hall who probable own stock in that solar tower that wish I would leave. Too bad for them I'm coming back next fall...I love this town and the awesome people I've met here. Why let a handful of delusional people spoil it for the angry majority?

  4. I agree, stay where ever you are and don't bother coming back. We would like you to be someone elses headache. And take that idiot 2+2=Banana idiot with you.

  5. The Reform Slate IS the minority trying to stir up trouble. Even reading the Sperling Report is misconstrued. Did you actually 'read' the report correctly?

We have a ratio of 17 children to a teacher. Do you know that in most cities the ratio is 28 or 30+ (some 35 to 40) to one teacher? Our Quartzsite children are getting more attention and service. The expenditures may be 10% less per student, but where they are spending more, they have many more services (ie: auditoriums, gyms, lunch halls, mulitple sports fields, etc). So for 10% less it appears the students are getting a lot of teaching and attention for the money. Yet, we will be constructing a new community center and a concession stand for all students, citizens and visitors.

In such a recession as we have been having in the US, we have the same unemployment rate, no higher, no lower. Yet, future job growth over the next ten years is predicted to be 21.50% here in Quartzsite.

The cost of housing is lower here, rent costs are lower, violent crime is less than the US average and that is because of the police presence.

Our comfort rating of 44 equals the average of the entire country, north and/or south, east and/or west.

If you do not like these types of facts, then please, you certainly do not have to live, here, visit here, or have a business here or with any combination thereof.

  6. I certainly read the report correctly!

You can't credit the incumbents or the public school system for Quartzsite's education success. The scholars Academy is privately run and is doing a wonderful job considering what they have to work with.

The "comfort level" is climate, and we all know that's why so many people come here.

As far as the other numbers go, the Town seems to pretty well stagnant, and while there may be a predicted future job growth of 21.5 % over the next ten years, current job growth is - 5 %(There is also a predictable cost of living increase etc. over ten years...and Quartzsite is already 13.71 % higher than the national average).

Homes have depreciated 6.9 % in value.

Violent crime may be 1 point lower than the national average but Quartzsite's population is made up mostly of older folks, and violent crime is mostly attributed to young men between 15 and 25. However, property crime is the same (3).

Quartzsite has a substantially greater percentage of residents living below the poverty level, and the income numbers show that is true for the four lowest income brackets.

The point was that what we are currently doing is not good enough, and more of the same will certainly not yield improvement.

As for the "reform slate" being the minority, I guess we will all know in a few more days...

  7. And my apologies for the fact that I can't seem to get the graphs to read right. The national average is chopped off of the right hand side. I always include the link to the original source so that readers may do their own investigation.

  8. AR says: You can't credit the incumbents or the public school system for Quartzsite's education success. The scholars Academy is privately run and is doing a wonderful job considering what they have to work with.

Well, AR, when I wrote above, where did I say anything about the incumbents there?

My comments were specifically about Sperling's Report. I gave the facts as they were presented in this report, nothing more, nothing less. These comments were to the public to show that this is a very nice place to visit, work, bring in a business, and/or live. I would appreciate that you do not falsify one's comments.

As far as the current joblessness at -5%. Well Detroit is over -18%, Phoenix is over 12%, same for Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and the national average is -8%, so it appears we are doing better here during a severe recession.

One reason that the violent crime is 1 point lower than the national average is exactly that this is a 'senior' retiree town and that the young criminals take advantage of exactly that. Yet, we are lower than the national average.

    ESTIMATED HOUSEHOLDS BY HOUSEHOLD INCOME

    Income between 15K and 25K 23.12%

    Income between 35K and 50K 19.16%
    Income between 50K and 75K 9.45%

Since you, AR, mentioned that this is a town of older folks (your words), you should also note that they are mostly on Social Security Income. Therefore, they would represent the lower income brackets (unfortunately). If this town had a broader breakdown and more diverse, the numbers would change accordingly. The higher brackets reflect those with businesses, are younger with paying jobs, and those that were fortunate to have other retirement funds such as pensions.

Homes have depreciated 6.9% in value. Well, in most cities, homes have depreciated from 60% in the major-hit cities to at least 35% in most cities. I'd say we are very fortunate that it has only been 6.9% here.

We are in a recession folks, a bad one, but we all know things will get better. This Town Council has nothing to do with the World Economy. They are doing their best to clean up this town, open up opportunities for more business and have this town safe, and self-sufficient. The report and the facts of this report are true, yet separate from everything else.

  10. Like I said, Homes have depreciated 6.9% in value. Well, in most cities, homes have depreciated from 60% in the major-hit cities to at least 35% in most cities. I'd say we are very fortunate that it has only been 6.9% here.

Below is from the LA Times: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/money_co/2009/12/home-prices-rise-02-in-q3-after-two-years-of-depreciation.html

Los Angeles and Miami both had gains above 4%. But eight areas have seen their prices plunge more than 50% since reaching peak prices, including Merced, which has dropped 66%. Three others in the Central Valley have seen similar dives.

In all, prices in 128 areas have slid more than 10% from their highest points.

The largest declines in the third quarter were in Bend, Ore., with a 5.6% fall, and Las Vegas, with a 5% slump. Bend’s prices are now 33.5% below their peak in 2006, and prices in Las Vegas have dropped 56% overall.

These were a few examples of how badly the recession has been for the last 2 years plus. Other cities like Detroit has lost more than 60% in value, and they have been in a recession since 2000. You cannot look at just what has happened in the last quarter but at how the recessive economy has hurt us all in the long run. Quartzsite has escaped most of what is happening elsewhere.

And, for the cost of living. I can't disagree with that one point. If you of the opposing group do not stop creating such a problem here and let the infrastructure continue, we will never get supporting services to help lower the cost of living. There are no hospitals here, no grocery chains, no real drug stores, many other things that if they were here, you would have more proper pricing for things let alone health and dental care. Not having enough supportive services here and therefore not having competition and competitive pricing, is exactly "why" the cost of living is higher than the average. Let the forward progress continue and as the recession subsides, people will start coming back and growth will continue again.
